Methodology

Private investigators employ many different methods to find out the facts in a variety of subject matters. When they carry out investigations, they may use several types of surveillance or searches. When verifying facts such as workplace or residential address, they may make telephone calls, visit the workplace or do searches in public or private databases. In other cases, especially those involving missing persons, or background investigations, private investigators often interview people to gather as much information as possible concerning an individual. In most cases, private investigators are retained by lawyers, businesses, and the general public, to help in legal, financial, and personal problems. Private investigators offer a range of services, including executive and corporate services; they do pre-employment check-ups and individual profiles. They investigate cases of identity theft, sexual harassment, fraud, and intellectual property. They also carry out support functions in cases of civil responsibility and bodily harm, insurance claims and insurance fraud, child custody and protection, missing persons, pre-marital investigations, and they are also sometimes retained to prove or disprove infidelity.

At present, with the marked increase of cases of violence within the family, and of cases of household help using violence towards children, private investigators are also being retained by wives or parents who discover that their children show clear signs of having been hit.
